Everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 price, and more!

Updated on 30 April 2024

Published on 30 April, 2024 - The iPhone 14 was released in 2022, along with the iPhone 14 Plus, Pro and Pro Max. Retailing for upwards of A$1,299 for a brand new model, it’s important that buyers know what it is they are paying for with an iPhone 14. Whilst it does boast a few improvements compared to the iPhone 13, some phone experts feel that it's not that big an upgrade. So, how much is the iPhone 14, is it worth the price, how can you find it cheaper and what are those standout new features? We'll dive into all these questions and more as we explore the price of this Apple iPhone.

What are the main features of the iPhone 14?

The long-awaited iPhone 14 has been released with plenty of fanfare. However it’s important to remember that a lot of the hype relates to the features that are only found in the Pro and Pro Max models (including a Telephoto camera, Always-on Display and Dynamic Island).

In technical terms, the iPhone 14 actually shares a lot in common with the iPhone 13, including the same size bionic chip (A15), a 12MP main camera, and the Cinematic Mode function, a video feature which provides amazing depth of field. However, there are a few key differences that may justify the price difference for you.

Performance

The most significant of these is the 5-core GPU, an upgrade from the 13’s 4-core GPU. It also features 6GB of memory, up from the iPhone 13’s 4GB of memory.

Camera

Those who enjoy making movies may well be swayed by the Action Mode function, which is one of the most exciting features of the iPhone 14. This clever video function stabilises the shot, improving the look of stunts, sports or action scenes.

Battery life

The iPhone 14 offers a slight increase in battery life, up from 19 hours of video playback for the iPhone 13, to 20 hours. However the iPhone 13 Pro Max outdoes this with an impressive 28 hours of video playback, whilst the iPhone 14 Pro Max boasts 29 hours of video playback.

Safety features

There are two key safety features of the iPhone 14 that are worth noting. These are Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection; two of the most talked about features of the iPhone 14 series. Although the iPhone 13 offers Emergency SOS, it cannot connect with satellites. However this amazing feat of technology will only appeal to those who plan on heading up mountains or out to sea. Apple’s new Crash Detection technology is, however, worth writing home about. It is an incredible development in smartphone technology. The iPhone 14 can detect a crash (such as a car crash) and will automatically call the emergency services.

Overall

Overall the jump from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 14 is a small one, with improvements focused on camera refinements, safety features and processing tweaks. If these factors are important to you then the iPhone 14 is of course, worth the price. For shoppers whose current smartphone is older than an iPhone 13, then the iPhone 14 is also worth considering. However, owners of a standard iPhone 13, or even the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, will only see a considerable difference if they opt for the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max instead of the iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Plus.

How does it compare to the iPhone 13 prices, and to competitors?

There's no denying that an iPhone 14, refurbished or new, will cost you more than an iPhone 13. The price of an iPhone 13 (128GB) can be as low as just A$669 (at time of writing this) if you buy it refurbished from Back Market, around A$195 less than the price of a refurbished iPhone 14 with the same storage. In fact, you can even buy a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max for as little as A$929 (at time of writing this). The iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max actually has a brighter screen and better battery life than the standard iPhone 14 model. It's also important to note that Apple has discontinued the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, so a refurb is the only choice if this is the model you want.

However, you should also know that a refurbished iPhone 14 will cost you considerably less than the Samsung Galaxy S22. This phone came out in the same year to directly compete with the iPhone 14, but unlike the 14, features a Telephoto Lens. It currently retails at A$1,149 new (128GB), but you can save A$620 by getting a refurbished version of the S22 for as little as A$529 (at time of writing this) from Back Market.
